Discovered this program only a few days ago and find it very good except it does not allow a date range to be set under most headings such as“Reports/Payment” but it can be set under “Reports/Security”. I live in Australia and our Tax year is from 01 July to 30 June. I would very much appreciate this feature be added.
Support for Financial year · Issue #4250 · portfolio-performance/portfolio · GitHub would provide all you need. It would just be a tweak for year in settings.
Hi @Astro, I’m in little old Blighty and I’ve struggled with this as well since the tax year here is from 6th April to 5 April in the following year. But the penny has dropped since I now realize there’s absolutely no merit in assessing this period for investment purposes.
Having said that, I do need to keep on top of any disposals i make because of capital gains tax, which I can now quickly and simply achieve via a widget on the dashboard - as is explained here: Inability to filter transactions by date… - #4 by AndreasB.
I don’t anything about Aussie taxes - maybe that widget trick thing will be useful, changing the reporting period from 01 July to 30 June.
Returns are normally quoted on a Financial Year basis so it makes sense to have comparable figures.
The GitHub link I posted raised the issue for India.
Would you like to demonstrate that? You can’t, and if you could it would be much more complicated than just changing the year definition setting.
OK, point taken. I was just trying to be helpful. Perhaps I shouldn’t bother in future.
By the way, investment fund returns can be quoted on a financial year basis here in the UK and ? perhaps Australia as well but it’s not common practice - most fund managers and reporting platforms (like Morningstar, Trustnet) use the calendar year. And as regards to individual stock and ITs registered on LSE, there’s no requirement to follow the fiscal year - all companies in the UK can choose their own financial year-end.
PP works on the general principle that all investments are the same and then tweaks things that are different. It’s really useful explaining what you expect to understand other perspectives.
Hi flywire & Rich28,
Thank you both for your comments regarding my problem.
I’m very new to this software, discovered it about a week ago and thought I had hit the jackpot only to discover the lack of date range for two important items (for me) under the “Reports” heading.
For example the date range for the Fiscal year can be set for Chart, Performance, Calculation, Chart-2 Return/Volatility and Securities.
But not available for Payments and Trades.
If a date range was available for the Payment Report I could use that information to calculate my total income for the fiscal year including Dividend income, Tax on dividends (called Imputation Credits in Australia) and Interest Income. Portfolio Performance is a beautiful program and I am simply requesting that a date range be added to the Payment Report and perhaps to the Trades as well.
Also, I have not been able to locate the Widgets that has been mentioned elsewhere. Perhaps someone can help me with that.
Introduction - Portfolio Performance Manual search for widgets or just go to Performance - Portfolio Performance Manual.
Thanks Flywire.
Hi @Astro, Sorry for being slow in getting back you.
I’m guessing you’ve now been able to work out that if you apply the ‘Only closed trades’ filter on the ‘Trades’ view details of all your disposals are displayed, including any that featured in a particular tax year. The trick which I referred to, makes it possible to refine what’s displayed here – you can specify a date range that corresponds to the tax year you’re contending with, and potentially filter out a particular securities account as well. The link in my earlier post will take you to a write up about this widget.
Hi Rich28, Thanks for trying to help me with setting a tax year in the payments column. Unfortunately I’m struggling to get the widget to do what I require. I will continue trying to understand the process and hopefully will eventually achieve what I require of the program. I do not wish to use any more of your valued time and will return to the forum when and if I get a satisfactory result. Thnaks again for your help, Astro.
