I have assets in multiple currencies, mostly USD and EUR. I usually select USD as a visualization for my portfolio, but if I try changing it to EUR or any euro-paired currency (like CHF) the P/L and YTD data is substantially different, in some caseses more than 4 times lower in eur vs usd. How can this be possible? Surely currency conversions can’t account for this much variance
Well, they can. They can even turn a profit into a loss (or the other way round).
could you compare this in your portfolio? I’m getting quite big numbers here, for example (fake numbers) one is +30.000 usd profit, the other one is -1000 loss.
To be honest, it is really hard to answer your question without any details on the actual transactions. What you are sharing sounds like very broad difference. But how to tell without a date, without knowing which exchange rates you are using (the built-in, your own custom ones), the size of a transaction (if it is about 1 billion, maybe 30K is not so much), …
Even with USD300k purchase, USD30k gain, it can become easily negative gain viewed from EUR or even CHF perspective, since USD lost a lot of value recently.
But yes, without knowing time and order value, it is just guessing.
