Import from PDF files in manual

@Nirus Hi, I want to add the Import PDF section to the manual. From @Sn1kk3r5, I received a demo PDF to illustrate the necessary steps. My bank/broker (BNPPBF - Dutch language) isn’t supported yet; so, I can’t use those as an example.

Unfortunately, the demo note is in German. Do you have an original banknote in English; for example a buy transaction? I’ve tried to convert back into PDF one of the English extracted notes from the forum to produce a kind of bank-formatted pdf but that didn’t work. I’m not sure why.

PS Converting with “Print to PDF” seems to work, although rearranging text (such as splitting the address over several lines) doesn’t.

Self-created PDFs cannot be used. because they look the same but the text can be formatted “differently”.

is the original document a PDF?

Hi @stoeggich,

Hugo refers to the txt files coming from the debugs and are used in the test cases.
Those can’t be reconverted of course.

Hi,
No, I took the text file from the forum and converted it to pdf with the print to pdf function (in Windows). This works fine as long as you don’t change anything.

But I need a banknote look-alike in English for the documentation and eventually for the video demo. So, I would like to change the layout a bit; for example, splitting the address over several lines to have a more visual and realistic appealing document. But, then, the import doesn’t work any longer.

It’s a manual hack that imports correctly. I’ll have to align the consideration column later and I can’t reproduce the Generated At timestamp from the PP repo because the characters aren’t in the pdf file.

Did you regenerate the PDF from the repo?
The import and import:debug works very well. Which data source for historical prices would you suggest, as PortfolioReport doesn’t immediately recognise the security?

No, I hacked the pdf code in donor pdf to desensitise it. In Sample pdf Bank Document (Broker Contract Note) by flywire · Pull Request #106 · portfolio-performance/portfolio-help · GitHub I documented the pdf code mods to create/maintain it.

A section Importing PDF documents is added to the manual. I also tried to create a tutorial video for the “request importer” as you suggested in this post. Can you take a look at the text and video? Suggestions are welcome, especially for the video (timing, color scheme, …).

I like the video… just one remark… you left the second John Doe untouched here we could place the info that personal details are distributed over the document, so everyone should ensure that ALL personal data is anonymized.

Could you add the topic “Requesting a New Importer / Troubleshooting” as a separate sub-topic in the “manual” for better linking? (Maybe rename the topic as well)
