I don’t understand the realized capital gains entry on the 1 year timeline of the attached Nikola entry. PP says I realized $3940.51, but looking at the trades in the lower section, it looks like it should be $1645.48 ($1,850.40-$204.75)? What am I missing?
The trades show the gains since you bought the security. The performance calculation shows the gains since one year ago.
So if you, e.g., bought a share two years ago for $20, which happened to be worth $25 one year ago, and then sold it last week for $35, the trade profit was $15 (35–20), but the realized capital gains amount to only $10 (35–25) (assuming a reporting period of one year).
So if I bought a share two years ago for $100, which happened to be worth $10 one year ago, and then sold it last week for $100, the trade profit was $0, but the realized capital gains amount to +$90 !? (assuming a reporting period of one year)?
I feel this should be named differently then, maybe “virtual realized capital gain”, or so, if the selected reporting period does not cover the entire holding period of the trade/instrument.
I think, with the current name users naturally assume this should show the capital gains you actually realized in the selected reporting period, like in the “sum” column of the “closed trades” under payments.
